Add these 5 astronomical events to your 2012 calendar

Get out your 2012 daily planner, you’re going to need it for these neat astronomical events that Inland Northwest neighbors will be able to view from their own backyard - or at least a very tall hill.

This is simply a general reminder. When it comes closer to the event, we’ll coordinate with your region’s astronomy clubs to see where the best place to view them will be.

Quadrantid Meteor Shower

North America is also the prime viewing location for this annual meteor shower. Quadrantid is named after a now extinct constellation. Astronomers believe the Quadrantids come from a parent asteroid.

The best viewing time is the morning of January 4th around 3 a.m. local time until dawn. Dress warmly.

Annular Eclipse

The Western United States has a chance to watch an annular eclipse of the sun on May 20th. The eclipse is completely visible from our neck of the woods and only partially visible from the rest of North America.

Will your region have a White Christmas?

Will your region have a White Christmas?

Consider this our holiday greeting card arriving just in time for the holiday weekend. It's a map displaying the probability of a white Christmas in areas around the United States using data from the National Climatic Data Center.

There's no way to zoom in, but if you look carefully at the Eastern Washington and North Idaho regions, our chances of a white Christmas range from 26-100 percent depending on where you're located.

Have a safe weekend and don't forget to email weather photos at news4@kxly.com.

Marcello the Cat Loves North Idaho Snow

Marcello the Cat Loves North Idaho Snow

Is your cat an outdoor cat? It may be okay hanging out in the backyard chasing squirrels and smelling flowers, but check out this cat in Priest Lake. His name is Marcello and he’s the ultimate outdoor cat. Marcello was photographed with his friend, Richard Bohn, out in Friday’s snow.

The snow kitty is not phased at all by the heavy snow fall while Bohn shovels snow near his Priest Lake cabin. Marcello is embracing the elements like a yeti. He’s braver than most cats who merely sniff the snow and run back inside.

Schweitzer Mountain Is Opening Saturday

Schweitzer Mountain Is Opening Saturday

Groomers have been working this morning to prepare the mountain for its season opener on Saturday. It's the earliest the resort has ever opened for the winter season since 1984. The early season conditions are a product of their snow making system and 23 inches of natural snowfall this season.

The man-made snow was converted from 3.7 million gallons of water collected from a spring runoff and stored in a mountain-top reservoir. When converted to snow, it equated to about 18 inches on Midway and Happy Trails.

Sean Briggs, Marketing Coordinator says they're running the Basin Express and Musical Chairs double for the weekend.

In Brief: Snowstorms Expected

In Brief: Snowstorms Expected

We've already seen our first snow in the Inland Northwest and KXLY4's Chief Meteorologist Kris Crocker said several more winter storms are on the way.

Light to moderate snow is expected Wednesday in the valleys, Crocker said. The chance of snow lingers through Friday with moderate to heavy snowfall in the valleys.

She also said the temperatures aren't going to climb high enough to do much melting anytime soon.

Idaho State Police Offer Winter Driving Safety Class

Idaho State Police Offer Winter Driving Safety Class

Perhaps your winter driving skills are not up to par. One popular test for vehicles is the moose (or elk) test. It’s just how your vehicle acts when you evade a suddenly appearing obstacle. Add snow to that formula.

Idaho State Police are holding a Road Safety Class for the winter season next week. It’s a classroom-based course that educates drivers the typical problems associated with winter road conditions in Idaho. It's being held at the District Office, located at 615 W. Wilbur Ave. in Coeur d'Alene.

Event Details: The class is on Saturday, November 19th, at 9 a.m. It’s a three-hour course at no cost. Class size is limited to 60 people. To sign up, call (208) 209-8620.

Making Snow At Schweitzer Mountain Resort

Making Snow At Schweitzer Mountain Resort

The snow guns are fired-up at Scheitzer Mountain Resort this week, but the slopes are getting a little help from the atmosphere at well.   Dave Kulis, Schweitzer's Director of Sales & Marketing, emailed me several snowmaking photos this afternoon.  A short time later, he emailed back saying the snow was falling from the sky!  Snowmaking operations started Tuesday and will continue as long as it stays cold enough.
