City of Priest River reports wastewater release into the Pend Oreille

The city of Priest River is looking into its wastewater treatment plant after an “unknown quantity of sludge” was released into the Pend Oreille River on Wednesday.

According to a news release from the city, the hour-and-a-half-long release was “observed” by a wastewater operator “before it was stopped.”

“The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency have been contacted about this potential violation of the city's federal NPDES permit for the discharge of treated wastewater into the Pend Oreille River,” the news release continued.

Citizens are not at risk from the wastewater release and Priest River is “taking further action to prevent this type of event from reoccurring.”

Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Pend d'Oreille Winery Offers Refillable Magnums

Pend d'Oreille Winery Offers Refillable Magnums

Fill 'er up, please!

On a recent visit to Sandpoint, Idaho it was discovered that Pend d'Oreille Winery has a magic spigot from which a never-ending flow of wine pours. That may be a tad-bit dramatic... yet they still have an awesome offer of refillable magnums of wine.

The idea came from co-proprietor Julie Meyer, who was tired of seeing empty bottles of wine go to waste (there is no market for recycled glass in Sandpoint, so the city is forced to reintegrate the glass into solid waste for disposal at a landfill in Eastern Oregon).

The 1.5 litre bottles, or more affectionately known as "Magnums" by wine-os, can be purchased for $27 at first. Then, a refill only costs $17.50.

Denise Alveari, the winery's PR person, says Pend d'Oreille is the first in Idaho - if not the Northwest - to do this.

The winery offers refills of their house Bistro Rouge Red Table Wine or a white wine, which they happened to be out of when I was in town.

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

Department of Interior Recommends Idaho Backcountry for Congressional Protection

A new report suggests 18 backcountry areas that are recommended to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar for congressional protection.

At this point it’s only a preliminary list that will be used to collection local support for the foundation of a bipartisan public lands bill that they hope to pass through Congress.

The list was compiled by Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes and BLM director Bob Abbey based on input from congress, state and city officials and interested parties.

"The backcountry areas we identify in this report are by no means the only public lands that may deserve protection by Congress, but this preliminary list of possibilities shows that there is a compelling case for bipartisan legislative action to conserve lands for recreation, protection, and enjoyment," said deputy secretary David J. Hayes.

Locations from Washington, Idaho and Montana made the list. They’re not exactly localized near you, but if you find yourself traveling for vacation, check them out.

The patrol says they issued nearly 18 hundred tickets for violations, took 214 vehicles out of service for safety violations and removed 43 drivers from behind the wheel, mostly for record of duty violations.

One driver was arrested for drunken driving and two had suspended licenses.
