Feds Start Foreclosure Proceedings on Rep. Phil Hart's Athol Home

Idaho Rep. Phil hart is now facing foreclosure on his Athol, Idaho home after years of refusing to pay taxes.  He's been fighting federal and state governments for years, saying income taxes are unconstitutional.  The federal government says he owes nearly $550,000 in taxes and fees, and they want to use the sale of his home to pay the debt.

Hart transferred the title of his property out of his name in an attempt to avoid the proceedings, which the U.S. Department of Justice called "fradulent".

The four-term legislator built the home with timber he took illegally from state land in the 1990s.

Don't be a fool, keep spuds in school

Back in June, Gov. Butch Otter defended the potato.

It started when the New England Journal of Medicine published results from a new study saying they contributed to weight gain.

Idaho is the potato state so it makes sense that he would defend their lively hood in a widely received opinion piece saying “News flash: Regularly eating ANYTHING in an irresponsible way contributes to weight gain and other health concerns!”

The saga continues with an effort to formulate legislation that will keep potatoes in schools.

Cigarette Tax Proposal Getting Another Hearing

Cigarette Tax Proposal Getting Another Hearing

A proposal to increase the tax on cigarettes in Idaho has all but failed in the legislature, but it's getting another hearing this afternoon.  Right now, there's a 57 cent tax per pack of cigarettes, but house Democrats want to add $1.25 to that tax.  They say it would bring in $50 million a year and help to reduce cuts to Medicaid and education.
