Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

This press announcement caught our eye in the station's mailbox. How could we resist a music festival called the "Treefot Music Fest"? Curious minds want to know if actual tree forts are involved, but a quick browsing of their website does not confirm our curiousity.

It's the first year for this festival that takes place in Boise from March 22nd to the 25th. It benefits the city's non-profit community radio station, KRBX, 89.9 FM.

The artist lineup is looking promising for those that are into modern sounds like Of Montreal, Blitzen Trapper, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, Talkdemonic, The Cave Singers and more. Formally based out of Spokane, The Globes will be performing at the festival as well. A full list of artists is available online.

Might be worth the drive down from the Panhandle to visit your central Idaho breathren. Let us know if you go.

Private investigation authors debuts new book

Years of private investigation stories turned out to be good material for a book. That’s how The Private Dick Diaries were made. Using actual cases, but rearranged to fictional the people and places, three authors collaborated to create a mixture of sarcastic comedy and a peek into the world of a private eye.

The authors will be in Hayden, Idaho signing copies of their new book in the series, Rules of Repo. It’s a benefit for TESH, a Coeur d’Alene based non-profit that provides professional rehabilitation services and vocational assistance for people with disabilities.

There will be a Q&A with the authors at well. The event starts at 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., February 9th at The Copa, located at 9265 N. Government Way.

A Little Time for Hank

A Little Time for Hank

Registration is now open for the fourth-annual “24 Hours of Schweitzer,” the all-day, all-night fundraiser held in honor of five-year-old Hank Sturgis of Sandpoint, who has the rare, fatal disease Cystinosis that affects only 500 people nationwide.

Participants, volunteers and sponsors are needed for the March 30-31 round-the-clock ski relay, which is one of only three events like it in the country.

As a tie-in to Hank’s love of super heroes, this year’s theme is “Hank’s Heroes: Mission Possible,” which recognizes participants for their efforts and the progress being made in the quest for a cure.  “This event would not be possible without the remarkable dedication and ongoing contributions of our many friends and supporters, who are real heroes to Hank and our family,” said Sturgis.

“24 Hours of Schweitzer” is a team relay for skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders that begins at 8:30am on Friday, March 30 and runs continuously through 8:30am on Saturday, March 31.  Participants raise pledges and see how many runs they can ski or ride in 24 hours.

Enjoy a White Christmas Buffet at Lookout Pass

Enjoy a White Christmas Buffet at Lookout Pass

A lack of snow is leaving a white Christmas in doubt at the lower elevations in the inland northwest, but winter is in full swing at Lookout Pass Ski Area. The mountain is open seven days a week through January 2nd. A full slate of family holiday activities is highlighted by Lookout’s annual Christmas buffet, served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Dec. 25.

Ski, Ride and Feast this Christmas

Kids can ski with Santa at noon Christmas Eve and Lookout opens at 10:00 a.m. on Christmas Day. Families can spend a day on the snow and enjoy a Christmas buffet in the lodge for $12.99 a person. Kids under 12 are $7.49. Diners can whet their appetites with teriyaki meat balls, deviled eggs, little smokies and cucumber rounds on rye. The main course features pot roast, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy and mixed vegetables. Huckleberry ice cream, peanut butter cheesecake and Bavarian cream tarts will be served for dessert. Egg nog, coffee or soft drinks are included.

Idaho Parks offering free winter recreation in January

A couple parks in Idaho are offering free snow recreation on January 7th. Some of the parks feature terrain for skiers (and snowboarders) and snowshoers.

Think of those Christmas gifts waiting to be tested - this is it. Or even introducing your kids to winter sports. In most situations, you'll need to bring your own equipment. The good news? There will be edible goodies!

Here’s what’s going on in North Idaho:

Farragut State Park - Athol, ID

Free Ski Lessons 10:00AM and 12:00PM, refreshments in the Park Visitor’s Center, 27.5 km of groomed set-track cross country ski trails, two designated snowshoe trails and a sledding hill.

Priest Lake State Park – Coolin, ID

The park will be providing free cross-country ski lessons – bring your own skis, poles and boots. There will be free hot chocolate and coffee available. The park will also be offering a guided snowshoe hike - bring your own snowshoes. All activities start at 10:00am and end at 2:00pm, at the Indian Creek unit of Priest Lake State Park.

Season of Giving Food Drive

Season of Giving Food Drive

Time is running out to donate to the Season of Giving Food Drive. KXLY, Yoke's Fresh Markets and Second Harvest are working together to collect food for Spokane's hungry. The drive ends on Thursday.

Second Harvest says it's never seen a need so great in its 40 year history and hopes that the community will step up and donate.

Giving is made easy thanks to Yoke's where you can donate cash and food, or buy a pre-made bag of food to donate. Another easy way to help: look up the KXLY Facebook fan page and donate directly.

KXLY hopes an extra big push on the final day will encourage people to give.
