Seattle band Pickwick scheduled to play Fall Fest

On the schedule for this year's Fall Fest in Sandpoint, the Seattle band Pickwick will be in town on September 1 performing tunes.

The band played Sasquatch and the Treefort Music Festival earlier this year so this will be quite the concert to attend for those interested in younger sounds from the indie scene.

If you've never heard the band before, check out the video above. The performance was recorded in a basement late last year for a Seattle blog, Sound on the Sound. Tamborines, grainy black and white video, everything you'll want to love about regional music.

Entrance to Fall Fest is free this year. Pickwick is expected to take the stage at 4 p.m. Other bands performing at the festival include the Jerry Joseph Band and Larry & his Flask.

The Wizard of Oz comes to Coeur d'Alene

The Wizard of Oz comes to Coeur d'Alene

Time Warner Cable and KXLY ABC 4 are proud to host the sixth annual "Movie in the Park " at Coeur d’Alene City Park on Friday, August 17th.  This year’s feature movie is the 1939 musical classic, "The Wizard of Oz."

This event has become somewhat of a North Idaho tradition for families and movie fans of all ages.  Everyone is encouraged to dress up as their favorite "The Wizard of Oz" character for a fun and festive evening.

“Time Warner Cable is delighted to sponsor this annual event for the North Idaho community,” said Correen Stauffer, Area Manager for Time Warner Cable.  “Movie in the Park is a great event for family fun and entertainment in a beautiful park setting. We invite everyone to visit our booth for a chance to win a HD TV or iPod and join us for a memorable summer evening.” said Stauffer.

Newport Chamber, Rodeo Association going old school this weekend

In the past, Paradise Amusements’ carnival rides have been one of the Rodeo attractions but this year they will not be in attendance.

The good news is that Spokane’s Hoopfest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which attracts over 200,000 people, will not conflict with this year’s Rodeo and require local residents to choose between the two fun events.”  Shumski continued.

The Chamber and the Rodeo Association are inviting all local non-profit groups who are interested in being a part of making this year’s Rodeo the biggest one ever to join in the fun and sign up to run a game or activity booth.

Big fun day planned at Schweitzer, with freebies

Big fun day planned at Schweitzer, with freebies

After several stops and starts, it seems like the summer weather is finally here to stay.  Although by North Idaho standards, all that means is that it's probably not going to snow again until after Labor Day.

Yes, our summers are short, and summer weekends tend to book up fast.  If you don't have plans yet for Saturday, June 30th, it would be tough to beat spending the day on Schweitzer Mountain.  That's the grand opening weekend for Schweitzer's summer operations.  Among the highlights:

  • Free chairlifts on Great Escape Quad
  • Free live music
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Wine Tasting
  • BBQ
  • Fun for the kids (bungee trampoline, climbing wall, and more)

One important note: due to late-season snowpack, the trails aren't ready for mountain biking.  So no bikes will be allowed on the chairlifts on June 30th.  But with a beer in one hand and a pulled pork sandwich in the other, who could ride a mountain bike, anyway?

Hello, Dolly and Ring of Fire coming to Coeur d'Alene

The summer line up for Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre is out for all to see. If you’re a fan of musical theatre, you’ll love the season because it’s a mix of classics and even newer productions.

Ellen Travolta will be playing the part of Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! Travolta’s real life husband will be featured in the production as well as Horace Vandergelder who is the nemesis/love interest for Dolly. Could be cute. That opens in June.

The above video is from the 1969 film of Hello, Dolly! We couldn’t resist the song “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”.

For July, it’s a little hotter so of course Ring of Fire fits in nicely there. It’s similar to the movie that came out about Johnny Cash, but it’s in musical form.

They’re calling it a jukebox style musical, which was an unknown term to us but we looked it up. Apparently it’s when the performance repertoire is made up of previously released songs. That’s what you’ll expect from that show.

Next on the list, they’re doing Spamalot and there was much rejoicing. Yay.

Seven Businesses Named For Upcoming Chairlift Pitch Contest

The finalists have been named for next week’s “Great Sandpoint Chairlift Pitch Contest”. Seven businesses will pitch their plans and ideas to really take the entrepreneurial industry in the region by storm in the comforts of a chairlift.

The contest is similar to the “elevator pitch” taught in multiple industries as a way to win someone over with your idea in 30 seconds. These local businesses have eight minutes.

  • Mahogany Floats, an electric propulsion system for boats.
  • Rushon, an online advertising and promotion program for adventure activities.
  • Ruby’s Lube, an all-natural consumer product (lip-balm) for outdoor uses.
  • 7B Skis, a custom manufacturer of wooden performance skis.
  • Eureka Institute, a non-profit educational effort promoting health, wellness and fitness activities.
  • 7B Productions, an entertainment and events production company.
  • Molehill Mountain Equipment, an online retailer of outdoor children’s gear.

The contest takes place on March 15th at 9 a.m. The businesses will be accompanied by judges on the ride up the slope on their choice of skis or snowboards.

Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

This press announcement caught our eye in the station's mailbox. How could we resist a music festival called the "Treefot Music Fest"? Curious minds want to know if actual tree forts are involved, but a quick browsing of their website does not confirm our curiousity.

It's the first year for this festival that takes place in Boise from March 22nd to the 25th. It benefits the city's non-profit community radio station, KRBX, 89.9 FM.

The artist lineup is looking promising for those that are into modern sounds like Of Montreal, Blitzen Trapper, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, Talkdemonic, The Cave Singers and more. Formally based out of Spokane, The Globes will be performing at the festival as well. A full list of artists is available online.

Might be worth the drive down from the Panhandle to visit your central Idaho breathren. Let us know if you go.
