Texting While Driving Is Now Banned In Idaho

Idaho governor Butch Otter has put the brakes on texting while driving. Drivers caught texting will face a fine come summer when the ban goes into effect.  Violators will have to pay an $85 fine.

The measure bars motorists from using smartphones and other handheld devices to review, prepare or send written communications.

It took three years of trying to get the measure passed. It generated broad support in the Legislature this year, backed by endorsements from law enforcement and auto insurers. And tearful testimony in hearings from the family of an 18-year-old Caldwell woman who died in a texting-while-driving accident in January put further pressure on lawmakers to take action.

The new law takes effect July 1.
