Local artist, coffee roaster team up for "Sea of Love"

You may recognize her artwork around Spokane even if you don’t know who she is. Tiffany Patterson has a strange style that takes you underwater to swim with impossible creatures. Her work is on the walls of local businesses and parks, but now it’s on a fair-trade coffee bag.

Doma Coffee, based out of Post Falls, releases a series of Valentine’s Day coffee every year. This is the fourth year and now Patterson’s art will be printed on the bag with soy-based ink. This year, the coffee is called: “Sea of Love”.

“The ocean plays a big role in my work and the creatures and happiness and humor are the main themes of my work,” Patterson said.

You can find her murals featured on the walls of Neato Burrito, a downtown burrito shop along 1st. If you go into the bathroom there, you can see more of her art on the dozens of event posters pasted on the wall.

Idaho Wants to Privatize Liquor Sales

Idaho Wants to Privatize Liquor Sales

Idaho State is hot on the heels of Washington in its quest to privatize liquor sales. A grocery industry lobbyist is behind the push, just like the one Costco Wholesale Corporation had success with in Washington last November.

Northwest Grocery Association President Joe Gilliam met with Governor Butch Otter in December to find out how to get a voter initiative on the ballot next November.

To make it happen, Gilliam needs 47,432 registered voter signatures by April 30th. The tight deadline means Gilliam would need a well-funded campaign to pay for paid signature gatherers. Costco backed Initiation 1100 last year with $22 million.

Retailers in Washington start selling liquor June 1st. Some people in Idaho worry the lower prices will drive Idahoans across the border for cheaper liquor sales. In the meantime, Joe Gilliam has a long road to hoe if wants an initiative on the November ballot.

Air Travel Down, Freight Flights Up

If you boarded a plane at Spokane International Airport in 2011, you may have noticed you had a little more elbow room.  According to Todd Woodard with the SIA,  air travel was down by 2.91 percent from 2010.  In 2010, 2.9 million passengers traveled through the Spokane.  In 2011, the airport reports 2.8 million passengers boarded and unloaded planes.  However, in November air travel was up from the year before with .64 percent more people flying the friendly skies.

"While our community has experienced the results of a nationwide daily capacity re-balancing by scheduled passenger airlines, we were optimistic based on observations that would trend in a positive manner," said Lawrence Krauter CEO of the Spokane Air Board.

The airport also reports a 25 percent increase in freight and mail in 2011, with 4,772 tons traveling  down the runways.

Broadband project gains funding for three more years in Idaho

Broadband project gains funding for three more years in Idaho

Idaho's broadband project grant will be extended an additional three years. The Department of Administration announced yesterday their final approval of a $2.65 million grant to extend broadband mapping and a planning initiative for Idaho.

For the past two years the project has been collecting data from broadband service providers to create an interactive map of where high-speed internet exists and where it doesn't.

High-speed internet certainly doesn't exist in Pocatello. The New York Times reported that Pocatello, Idaho is the slowest city in the country.
